Richard Coutts received a Bachelors of Science degree in engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1986 followed by a Master of Science degree from Northeastern University in 1992. In 1994 he was awarded a architectural teaching fellowship at the University of Oregon, followed by a research fellowship at Cornell University, where he received his second Master of Science in 1997.

In 1998, Richard joined John McConnell, Architect as a residential and commercial designer. He was made partner and the firm renamed McConnell+Coutts in 2000. In 2003, he founded Coutts Design Inc. His avocations include mobile design software and psychology.
